Second Years Group Site Exhibition/Installation Project 18th and 19th November, 2014

A day out looking at the work the second years have created for their Group Site Exhibition/Installation.  A list of the sites in hand so lets see what is out there.

The addresses are 1) High Street Arcade, 2) The old Iceland store on High Street, now run by Volcano, 3) Peppermint on Wind Street, 4) The No Sign Wine Bar on Wind Street, 5) The Environmental Centre Pier Street, 6) The Cross Keys on St Mary’s Street, 7) The Scene Plymouth Street, 8) The Grand Theatre Singleton Street.

It’s an interesting thing going out to observe, praise or criticize fellow student work, knowing it will be me being criticized next year. Not knowing what to expect I held an open mind prepared for anything. Having looked at the brief I was looking forward to seeing a variety of ideas, as it is asked that “the work must be made to address the atmosphere and connotations of your chosen site”.

It was a surprise to see so many gallery style installations from a Photography group.  Yes there are moving images, but not much use of still imagery.  I am just wondering if it a just a coincidence, collective thought of the year group or what has been asked for via the lecturers?  Thinking forward to next year would I want to do an installation piece as a photographer?

Second common theme is the death and destruction of the second world war.  There is a lot of emphasis on air raids on the city.  Are all the groups working collectively?  Are the Lecturers guiding the groups towards this subject matter?  Guessing on the feedback that I have witnessed it would believe that it is more of the groups sharing ideas and thought processes in the build up of the work.

The strength of the work is not what i expected.  With it being a group project, few showed a passion and belief in their work.  Some of the work looked as if it was thrown together last minute to fulfill a deadline.  There were some good ideas with the groups, and some interesting subject matter being attempted to visualize at the sites, but not always achieved.  Seeing that I was looking for the work, there was not many notice boards highlighting something going on at the locations that were being used.

You could see a difference in the quality of installation between the photo journalist groups and the photo arts groups.  The photo art side are showing a better understanding of the use of their acquired space better, portraying their thoughts through their work easier.  This does not say that all the photo art groups work were good.  The use of the Vault at the No Sign Bar was good, utilizing the dark, other worldly atmosphere there, with the candle flame and the mirrors creating an illusion of the room going on and on without end.

Going and looking at this work was helpful, showing how easy it is to make you work look rushed.  Planning, Panning, Planning and signage being the keywords i will take away with me.  Something that I am going to have to think about ready is, whether it is a subject or location that is needed first, then building from there.  There is also the consideration of who will be in the same group as me.
